Cookie policy
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that websites visited by users send to their devices (usually to their browsers), where they are stored and then sent back to the same websites on the user's next visit. While browsing a website, users may also receive cookies on their devices that are sent by different websites or web servers (so-called “third parties”), which may host certain elements (such as images, maps, sounds or specific links to pages on other domains) displayed on the website being visited.
Cookies are classified according to their purpose into “technical” cookies and “profiling” cookies:
-
Technical cookies are used solely for the purpose of “transmitting a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide that service” (Article 122(1) of the Italian Personal Data Protection Code).
These cookies are not used for any other purposes and are normally installed directly by the website owner or operator. They may be divided into the following categories:
-
Browsing or session cookies, which ensure normal browsing and use of the website, allowing users, for example, to complete a purchase or authenticate themselves to access restricted areas.
-
Analytics cookies, which are treated as technical cookies when used directly by the website operator to collect aggregated information about the number of users and how they visit the website.
-
Functionality cookies, which allow users to browse the website according to a set of selected criteria (such as language or products selected for purchase), with the aim of improving the service provided.
Users' prior consent is not required to install these cookies. However, the obligation to provide the information required under Article 13 of the Italian Personal Data Protection Code remains in force. Where the website operator uses only these types of cookies, such information may be provided using any method considered appropriate by the operator.
-
-
Profiling cookies are used to create user profiles and send advertising messages in line with the preferences users have expressed while browsing the internet.
European and Italian legislation requires users to be adequately informed about the use of these cookies and to provide valid consent.
These cookies are covered by Article 122 of the Italian Personal Data Protection Code, which states that “the storage of information in the terminal equipment of a subscriber or user, or access to information already stored, is permitted only on condition that the subscriber or user has given consent after having been informed using the simplified procedures referred to in Article 13(3)” (Article 122(1) of the Italian Personal Data Protection Code).
Cookies may also be classified according to their duration as “session” cookies and “persistent” cookies:
-
Session cookies are temporary cookies that disappear from the user's computer when the user leaves the website or closes the browser. They are generally stored in the computer's cache memory.
-
Persistent cookies remain on the user's computer even after the browser has been closed, until they expire or are deleted by the user. Their expiration date is determined by the website that sets them. They are often used to track users' browsing habits so that, when users revisit the website, it can retrieve the stored information and adapt to their preferences.
Cookies may also be classified according to their origin as “first-party” cookies and “third-party” cookies:
-
First-party cookies are sent by the operator of the website being visited by the user.
-
Third-party cookies are sent by a third party, other than the operator of the website being visited, through that website. These cookies are not under the control of the website operator. For further information about third-party cookies, including the purposes for which they are used, users are advised to consult the relevant privacy and cookie policies.
